A. There are many different levels of narcotics problems.
It becomes a problem when it adversely interferes with one's life. Often one is a 'problem user' when others are aware that there is some problem, but this type of person can have minimal insight into the total impact.
An narcotic use disorder is defined as somebody who uses excessive painkillers (e.g. opiates, heroin, methadone, oxycontin, percocet, vicoden, morphine) despite awareness of associated negative consequences directly or indirectly related to its use.
There are usually many efforts that the addict has made to control, limit or eliminate its presense, and these are frequently unsuccessful. The outcomes can be devastating and are often accompanied by varying (and sometimes overwhelming) levels of denial that there is an issue at all. Serious illness, medical problems and even death (in a small percentage of cases) may ensue.
